(334x192mm) pp: xxxvi+[1]-418,[16], complete, portrait bound between pp 6 & 8, half page engraving to first leaf after title of Nuremberg + 125 engraved plates of historical figures, the majority in armour [pl. 24 misnu…mbered 26], complete, with the armorial bookplates to front endpapers of Michael Tomkinson and Henry Burton Tate (of the Tate sugar family). From the Library of William (Bill) Reid CBE (1926-2014). Foxing and browning throughout not affecting the majority of portraits, bound in full vellum discoloured however sound & tight & very good. Jakob Schrenck von Notzing (1539-1612) came from the old Bavarian noble family Schrenck von Notzing and entered the service of Duke Ferdinand II of Tyrol (1529-1595) in 1565. He became his advisor, secret secretary and valet. At his residence, Ambras Castle, the Duke created an extensive historical collection that still exists today, it includes a collection of armour belonging to famous men of the 15th and 16th centuries. He commissioned Jakob Schrenck von Notzing to create a picture inventory of this so-called "hero's armory" in order to publish a book about it. The Augsburg engraver Dominicus Custos produced the illustrations. Jakob Schrenck von Notzing continued the work and published the book "Armamentarium Heroicum" in 1601 in Latin and in 1603 in German, he also wrote the biographies of the people depicted in it. The work was reprinted in Nuremberg in 1735 but with smaller illustrations. Tomkinson, Michael (1841-1921), carpet manufacturer, was born 29 May 1841 at his father's house in the High Street, Kidderminster. An Anglican and a churchwarden, Tomkinson collected rare books and manuscripts and he acquired a national reputation as a collector of Japanese ivories and lacquer work.

Titolo a stampa e testo, incorniciati da ricco apparato ornamentale (costituito da putti, mascheroni, vasi e panoplie). Elaborato antiporta con al centro il ritratto a mezzo busto di "Ferdinando II conte del Tirolo".Prima…edizione in lingua tedesca. Completa del frontespizio inciso e delle 125 tavole incise a bulino eseguite dall'incisore-editore Dominicus Custos (Anversa 1560 ca.- Augusta 1612) sui disegni di G. B. Fontana, una è attribuita a Georg Pencz. I condottieri vengono ritratti come fossero statue, in una nicchia, entro colonne adorne di putti ed elementi vegetali. Sulla base sporgente delle colonne ricorrono motivi decorativi, mentre al di sotto del ritratto è inserita una tabella rettangolare con cornice ornamentale, affiancata da due putti, destinata ad accogliere il nome del personaggio effigiato.Raccolta voluta da Ferdinando d'Asburgo, conte del Tirolo e Arciduca d'Austra. Realizzata sotto la direzione del suo segretario e consigliere Jacob Schrenck von Notzing e pubblicata da Giovanni Agricola nel 1601, benché l'inizio dell'impresa sia da porre attorno al 1582, quando Custos fu incaricato di realizzare le incisioni sulla base di disegni di Giovanni Battista Fontana, pittore responsabile della decorazione pittorica della Spanischen Saal del castello di Ambras. Intento della raccolta era quello di formare una sorta di catalogo illustrato dell'armeria personale dell'arciduca, in cui ogni divisa sarebbe stata "indossata" dal suo proprietario, realizzando una teoria di "exempla virtutis" basata in primo luogo, ma non unicamente, sul valore militare degli effigiati.Sono raffigurati: gli imperatori Federico III, Massimiliano I e II, Carlo V, Ferdinando I; re Carlo IX e Francesco I di Francia; i governanti turchi Soliman e Mehmet; Duchi Giovanni e Cosmo de' Medici, l'elettore Giovanni Federico di Sassonia, il genovese Giano Fregoso, Francesco e Federico da Montefeltro che regge un libro oltre la spada e molti altri, Digismondo Malatesta, Flavio Farnese, Sebastiano Veniero, Vespasiano Gonzaga, Emanuele Filiberto, Ottavio Farnese, Jacopo Trivulzio, Bartolomeo Colleoni. Bell'esemplare dell'edizione in lingua tedesca pubblicata due anni dopo l'edizone latina. qualche macchietta nel margine esterno bianco, antica numerazione ms nel margine superiore destro, indice alfabetico delle tavole (ms in epoca antica) posto in fine al volume.
