Dutch text with an English summary. Introduction in both Afrikaans and English. Van Riebeeck Society Second Series No. 13. 8vo; original brown cloth gilt; pp. (xii) + 462 + (10); 6 plates. Small stain to top edge of upper board. Hendrik Swellengrebel Jr (1734-1803) was the son of Hendrik Swellengrebel who served as governor for…a number of years and retained extensive properties there. The younger Swellengrebel lived a comfortable life in the Netherlands, but visited the Cape between 1776-1777. Thereafter he retained an interest in Cape affairs. He became associated with the rebel Cape Patriot movement and did much to promote its economy. His letters contain much information on the social history of the colony in the last quarter of the 18th century. - Van Riebeeck Society.

Soft cover. Condizione: New. 199 pages : illustrations ; 24 cm. Summary:"The theme of this volume, state formation and mercantile evolution in Indonesia, has been the subject of historiographical debate for quite sometime. In recent decades the focus of this debate has shifted from the external challenge posed by westerners towa…rds the indigenous response to that challenge and towards local regional situations, adding to the knowledge of state and state formation. Nine case studies on state formation in the Indonesian archipelago illustrate this approach. They deal with widely differing states, in different periods and regions, ranging from the twelfth-century Javanese state of Kadiri to the twentieth-century Netherlands Indies colonial state, and from Riau and West Borneo to Buton and the Seram Sea. Most of the studies concern states that came under the influence of the Dutch East Indies Company or its successor, the Dutch colonial state."--BOOK JACKET.
