Die babylonisch-assyrische 'Beschwoerungskunst' oder 'Magie' kannte eine Vielfalt von Heilvorschriften und Zeremonien, darunter zahlreiche defensive Rituale zur Loesung von UEbel und zur Reinigung des Patienten. Diese Abwehrrituale richteten sich etwa gegen Daemonen, Goetterzorn, Behexung, Feinde, den Fluch als Folge eines Tabubruchs, Geister oder boese Vorzeichen. Auch das traditionsreiche und fuer den Koenig in besonders feierlicher Form durchgefuehrte Badehaus-Ritual hatte die Funktion, UEbel abzuwehren. Entgegen ueblicher Annahme stellt es aber nicht einfach ein unspezifisches Reinigungsritual dar, das durchzufuehren war, wenn boese Vorzeichen eine Gefaehrdung des Koenigs anzeigten. Vielmehr besitzt das Badehaus-Ritual einen besonderen thematischen Fokus: den verhassten, verunglimpften, von Schadenzauber und Feinden bedrohten Koenig, der selbst Schuld auf sich geladen hat. Das Ritual zeigt damit ein Bild des Herrschers, das dem von Monumentalarchitektur und Koenigsinschriften gepraegten Erwartungshorizont der mesopotamischen Koenigsideologie nicht entsprach: den kontraintuitiven Koenig. Im rituellen Kontext kann die Defizienz der koeniglichen Person thematisiert und ueberwunden werden. So dient das Badehaus-Ritual nicht zuletzt der Stabilisierung der koeniglichen Herrschaft.
