Sie kennen die Muster der Auflehnung, die aus Zeiten der Sklavenschiffe und -plantagen und der urbanen Slums rühren, und versuchen, kontemporäre afroamerikanische Kunst, Architektur und öffentliche Räume zu definieren, zu deuten und zu gestalten. Im zweiten Kapitel werden alltägliche Praktiken als Ausdruck von Kultur, Ästhetik und politischem Aktivismus verstanden und beschrieben. Die Umgestaltung von Raum gilt als Akt von Autonomie.
