Hardcover. Condizione: Good. George Cruickshank (illustratore). Here is "The Select Works of Tobias Smollett", being picaresque novels and various poems. Included is the "Memoir of Smollett" by Sir Walter Scott. The book is illustrated by George Cruikshank. It's a large single volume edition published by Stringer & Townsend in New York, circa 1853. Tobias Smollett (1721 - 1771, born in Scotland) was among the first few great English novelists. His marvelously complex episodic novels . picaresque adventures, really . were brilliant satires of British society. Comic and grotesque, perceptive and astute, hilarious and ribald, cruel yet sentimental, his novels shared a propensity for exaggerated plots filled with colorful characters who impede or help the hero, who seemingly stumbles through life and a series of hilarious and somewhat unlikely adventures. Each of these novels has much to reward the perceptive reader. The characters will live on in memory. Smollett, a Scot by birth, was a physician by trade, which gave him a peculiarly personal view of humanity, and a humanist at heart. He was for the underdog, and not averse to pointing out the foibles of wealth, fame and social class. Smollett was a great influence on Charles Dickens and many other subsequent novelists. This edition includes the "Memoir of the Life and Writings of the Author" by Sir Walter Scott. On the title page is stated "New Edition". The book has Illustrations by George Cruikshank. As well as a frontispiece portrait of Smollett, there are 15 full page engraved illustrations by Cruikshank. The book is undated, but was issued by Stringer & Townsend in New York circa 1855. CONTENTS : The Adventures Of Peregrine Pickle The Adventure Of Ferdinand Count Fathom The Adventures Of Roderick Random The Adventures Of Sir Launcelot Greaves The Expedition Of Humphrey Clinker The History And Adventures Of An Atom Poems : The Tears of Scotland / Song / Burlesque Ode / Ode to Mirth / Ode to Sleep / Ode to Blue-Eyed Ann / Ode to Independence TITLE : Select Works of Tobias Smollett (Two Volumes in One). AUTHOR : Tobias Smollett (1721 - 1771). INCLUDES : A Memoir of the Life and Writings of the Author by Sir Walter Scott. ILLUSTRATOR : George Cruikshank. IMPRINT : Stringer & Townsend. PLACE : 222 Broadway, New York. DATE : No date [ but 1853 as per contemporary advertising in other volumes ]. EDITION : Reprint (Publisher's statement : New Edition). DETAILS : Cloth-bound, hollow-back hardcover; Contains a frontispiece and 15 plate illustrations; size = approximately 5 1/2" x 9" x 2 1/4" (fat octavo); dark brown cloth with tile and decorative embellishments stamped in gold on spine; boards are treated with a series of cryptic decorations stamped in blind, around which extends a simple triple line border also stamped in blind; 973 pages; CONDITION - GOOD - This is a previously owned book that shows signs of use, but which remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted: EXTERIOR - Clean with the following noted: the boards exhibit moderate surface rub and abrasion and as well have various small scattered spots ; corner tips are bumped with attendant splitting of cloth; spine extremities are compressed and frayed; the cloth over the joints is split, front and rear; text-block edges are age-toned and display foxing and various small spots and smudges, but are basically clean. BINDING - Well read volume and a bit shaken -- the text-block sits a bit laxly in the case, although no leaves are detached or loose. INTERIOR - Clean and presentable with the following noted: Light foxing throughout; plate leaves are much darkened (a result of the ink's chemical action on the paper used, which is a different paper from that used for the text- and possibly an offset effect from removed tissue guards) ; else there are scattered small signs of use, such as small smudges, spots, etc - a few leaf tip creases or dog ears . a couple of production-related corner folds - else adequately preserved.

A new account of the central role developmental processes play in evolutionA new scientific view of evolution is emerging-one that challenges and expands our understanding of how evolution works. Recent research demonstrates that organisms differ greatly in how effective they are at evolving. Whether and how each organism adapts and diversifies depends critically on the mechanistic details of how that organism operates-its development, physiology, and behavior. That is because the evolutionary process itself has evolved over time, and continues to evolve. The scientific understanding of evolution is evolving too, with groundbreaking new ways of explaining evolutionary change. In this book, a group of leading biologists draw on the latest findings in evolutionary genetics and evo-devo, as well as novel insights from studies of epigenetics, symbiosis, and inheritance, to examine the central role that developmental processes play in evolution.Written in an accessible style, and illustrated with fascinating examples of natural history, the book presents recent scientific discoveries that expand evolutionary biology beyond the classical view of gene transmission guided by natural selection. Without undermining the central importance of natural selection and other Darwinian foundations, new developmental insights indicate that all organisms possess their own characteristic sets of evolutionary mechanisms. The authors argue that a consideration of developmental phenomena is needed for evolutionary biologists to generate better explanations for adaptation and biodiversity. This book provides a new vision of adaptive evolution.
