Found across this landscape in the historic past were Plains Apache, Comanche, Comanchero, and Cibolero trails and camps; Hispanos and their sheep and cattle herds, then later villages; Fort Sumner soldiers and Mescalero-Navajo captives; Anglo ranchers, cowboys, farmers, and outlaws; Hispano and Anglo homesteaders and railroaders; and many others. This heritage is manifested in numerous late prehistoric and historic archaeological sites, historic structures, the collective memories of many old timers (women and men), 3 area museums, the archives of the Public Library, and the landscape - river, lakes, springs, soils, plants, and animals.
