Damit stellt sie in fast 60 Jahren Bundesrepublik-Geschichte einen absoluten Präzedenzfall dar. Sie zeigt die Möglichkeit und Realisierbarkeit einer solchen Koalition, aber auch die Notwendigkeit günstiger Umstände. Die Voraussetzungen für eine derartige Koalitionsbildung stellen somit einen Betrachtungsschwerpunkt dar, schließlich würden sich daraus Rückschlüsse über andere Parteientwicklungen und vor allem Koalitionsbildungen unter Beteiligung der FDP ziehen lassen. Das 1969 gebildete sozialliberale Bündnis ist also auch für das heutige Parteienspektrum von Interesse. Zweitens erweckt die SPD/FDP-Koalition den Eindruck der Flexibilität und Offenheit des Parteiengeflechts für verschiedenste Koalitionen. Immerhin gingen diesem Zusammenschluss 20 Jahre CDU-Regierung - größtenteils mit der FDP - voraus. Die parteisystematische Varianz schließt eine Koalition aus Frei- und Sozialdemokraten mit ein, deren Grundlage hier untersucht werden soll. Schließlich bleibt noch die Frage, welche Umstände überhaupt zur Bildung einer Koalition führen. Anhand der sozialliberalen Koalition ist dies für historische Vergleichsanalysen anderer Koalitionsbildungen relevant.
