Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good. The Cena Trimalchionis of Petronius, together with Seneca's Apocolocyntosis and a Selection of Pompeian Inscriptions Author: Petronius; Seneca; edited by W. B. Sedgwick, M.A. Publisher: Oxford University Press, Clarendon Press, Oxford in 1954 Edition: Second Edition Binding: Original decorative red cloth hardcover Condition: Good Book Description An attractive second edition of this important collection of classical Latin texts, edited by W. B. Sedgwick and published by the Clarendon Press, Oxford. The volume includes Petronius's celebrated Cena Trimalchionis, Seneca's satirical Apocolocyntosis and a selection of Pompeian inscriptions, providing fascinating insights into Roman literature, society, satire and everyday life. Bound in the publisher's original red cloth, featuring distinctive black ornamental borders and lettering. Includes a photographic illustration of a bootmaker's shop sign from Pompeii. Distinguished Provenance - Robert K. Likeman OAM Of particular interest is the handwritten ownership inscription of Robert K. Likeman, Brasenose College, Oxford, dated 1961. Robert Likeman studied Classics, Oriental Languages and Medicine at Brasenose College, Oxford, before continuing his medical education at Middlesex Hospital, London. After emigrating to Australia in 1972, he developed a distinguished career in medicine, military service and historical scholarship. Specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, rural and remote medicine and tropical medicine, he served as Medical Superintendent of the Kirwan Hospital for Women in Townsville, Queensland, from 1986 to 1996. He also completed 24 years of service in the Australian Army, undertaking three overseas operational deployments, including service during the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Rwanda in 1995. He subsequently became Director of Army Health in Canberra, holding the rank of Colonel, and was awarded the Conspicuous Service Medal in 2001. An accomplished medical and military historian, Likeman is the author of numerous books, including Men of the Ninth (2003), Gallipoli Doctors (2010), From the Tropics to the Desert (2012) and The Thousand Doors (2019). In 2019, he was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for service to medicine. The ownership inscription provides an evocative connection between Likeman's early classical education at Oxford and his subsequent distinguished career in medicine, military service and historical writing. Condition Good vintage condition overall. Original red cloth binding with black printed decorative borders and lettering. Some light rubbing and wear to the boards and extremities, consistent with age. Internally, the pages show age-related toning and some discolouration, particularly to the preliminary endpapers. The illustrated title page and photographic plate remain clear and attractive. The handwritten ownership inscription of Robert K. Likeman, dated Oxford 1961, is present on the front endpaper, together with minor pencil notations. An interesting scholarly volume with identifiable and distinguished former ownership.…
