As a member of th…e provisional committee, he has been asked to prepare a list for this committee for Europe. He invites hiscorrespondent to join it ("I should not think that it would involve much labour or responsibility"). Note (Google): "Darby was secretary of the English Peace Society. He wrote and published literature on peace, international law and arbitration, and he attended several peace congresses. The Peace Society was one of the most influential elements in the British peace movement. It introduced the notion of arbitration to British inter-parliamentary peace work.".

Or shall I let your most creditable piece of journalism go unrecognised? Which shall I be accused of - vanity or ingratitude? Truly tis a question but since I alone suffer by vanity I shall not s…pare words of appreciation of your very graceful sketch of me in yesterdays' Journal. Mr Upham and myself agree in saying it is quite as creditable to you as to me - and I am 'proud' in being read in such a paper as the Home Journal. You know my idea of the latter - as necessary to my happines, as my prayer book is to my salvation! | To return to the sketch, I prticularly like it for its freedom from 'gush' and 'sensationalism' and I thank you for your 'charming' words. Now, for the picture. Mr Upham (and he is a good judge) calls it as good a reproduction as he ever saw, and I am glad to say 'tis not a caricature as has been my lot to possess. Let me thank your good husband and yourself - and be on the lookout for an advance copy of 'The Race of the Golden Rod'. | I ordered forty of the Journal, but dear me, they are lost in a sea of memories, so Mr Upham will tomorrow order more, many more- How glad I was that I saw you as I did on Friday last. As to Mr Whistler's correspondence, I have always felt obliged to refuse permission to anyone to publish Mr. Whistler's letters in view of his express directions to me in regard tp them. With regard to the marriage referred to I am assured that this is not contemplated [inaccurate!] & that the reports are unauthorised. | 2. Lady Hennessy's mother was the daughter of MrW. The essay commences with a reference to Charles Darwin, "Origin" having been published a few years before; "I suppose that animal life - supplied and controlled by the spirit of God (Gen[esis] I.2) - took its upward course throug…h the Ages, developing (possibly one from another as Mr Darwin supposes) and including all the different forms that are or have been, up to the 'man' of the Drift.[See Note below re. Pleistocene]. I suppose this creature's organism to have been similar to our own and his instinct & organic action, and the degree of its development must depend on the nature of an animals organs. I do not suppose that this man was more than an animal - that he had reason or speech- Birds build their nests by instinct; [For rest of text see images]" Note: A. The talk or lecture is in a flimsy folder on which is an apparent ascription to an "H.Harris" BUT see photograph of the concluding initials (not interpreted by me); B. "The image [of one page of six] is a handwritten letter or manuscript page from June 1865, containing a discussion of mythological and historical theories regarding ancient peoples and their origins. The author speculates on topics such as the origins of amber trade routes, the identity of the Finns and other northern tribes as descendants of Tubal Cain, and the potential characteristics of the descendants of Cain. The text concludes by acknowledging that these are merely theories, subject to change with better information or understanding of 'revelation.'"
