Sellick came to South Africa from Bristol in 1874, and became proprietor and editor of the Uitenhage Times. The family was subsequently closely associated with the affairs of the town, and nephew Alfred James Sellick became president of the Newspaper Press Union. This book is a vivid celebration of the earliest European settlement on the eastern frontier of the Cape colony. Uitenhage is now known as Kariega.
