Co-curated by print scholars Verna Posever Curtis and Dr. Selma Reuben Holo, the volume investigates how Francisco de Goya and Pablo Picasso used printmaking to interrogate the cultural mythology, existential violence and ritual drama of the corrida. Design work is by J. Eugene Felsch, with presswork by Milwaukee lithographer Burton & Mayer, Inc., issued in an original catalogue edition of 2,000 copies with grant assistance from the J. Paul Getty Trust. Extensive monochrome art plates, comparative print details and historical engravings present Goya's 1816 aquatint suite alongside Picasso's 1957-1959 sugar-lift aquatints executed for Pepe Illo's taurine treatise. Scholarly essays analyze the stylistic and philosophical divergence between Goya's shadow-drenched Romanticism, marked by political disillusionment following the Peninsular War, and Picasso's spontaneous, sunlit Mediterranean classicism.
