Hardcover. Condizione: new. Hardcover. The rise of industrial capitalism in the 19th century forged a new ecological order in North American and Western European states, radically transforming the environment through science and technology in the name of human progress. Far less known are the dramatic environmental changes exper…ienced by Eastern Europe, in many ways a terra incognita for environmental historians and anthropologists.A New Ecological Order explores, from a historical and ethnographic perspective, the role of state planners, bureaucrats, and experts face=Calibri> engineers, agricultural engineers, geographers, biologists, foresters, and architects face=Calibri> as agents of change in the natural world of Eastern Europe from 1870 to the early 21st century. Contributors consider territories engulfed by empires, from the Habsburg to the Ottoman to tsarist Russia; territories belonging to disintegrating empires; and countries in the Balkan Peninsula, Central and Eastern Europe, and Eurasia. Together, they follow a rhetoric of 'correcting nature', a desire to exploit the natural environment and put its resources to work for the sake of developing the economies and infrastructures of modern states. They reveal an eagerness among newly established nation-states, after centuries of imperial economic and political impositions, to import scientific knowledge and new technologies from Western Europe that would aid in their economic development, and how those imports and ideas about nature ultimately shaped local projects and policies. Examines the under-studied dramatic environmental changes experienced by Eastern Europe in the 19th century. Shipping may be from multiple locations in the US or from the UK, depending on stock availability.

Soft cover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Paperback Edition. Paperback. Between East and West. Studies in Anthropology and Social History. Text in English and French. We bring together historians, anthropologists, and political scientists dealing with Southeast Europe societies and cultures. Different narratives are told by Western… as well as Eastern social scientists. They meet each other on the ground of a common subject of analysis that becomes the loci of a dialogue between people, schools and cultures. Paul Stahl's suggestion was not to use his name into the title of the book. But the issues approached hereby (peasants and peasant societies in Southeast Europe, popular religion, theory and and fieldwork in social history and anthropology) reflect just his research inquiries. The usual encomiastic approach of a Festschrift has been replaced by the analysis of the main issues and ideas Paul H. Stahl has been puzzled for a long time. 527 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

gebundene Ausgabe. Condizione: Neu. 463 S. This volume brings together 22 articles by Paul Henri Stahl (1925-2008), director of the Institute for South-East European Studies (1999-2007), a member since its founding in 1963, honorary member of the Romanian Academy (1993), and professor at the École des Hautes Études en Sciences S…ociales (1969-1999). Paul H. Stahls extensive and multifaceted body of work continues the legacy of the Bucharest School of Sociology (1925-1948) one of the most significant collective scientific projects of the interwar period at the crossroads of several disciplines: sociology, ethnology, and history. This collection is the result of a carefully curated selection from his complete works, focusing on the overarching theme of the structures that organize the life of traditional societies in South-East Europe. The selected texts are grouped around several interrelated subthemes: archaic pre-state formations, old village communities, the relationship between the built environment (house, church, village) and the social group, biological and symbolic kinship, personal identity, and naming. ISBN 9786066545310 Der Spezialist für Bücher aus Siebenbürgen, dem Banat und Rumänien.
