A la session de la Chambre le 2 mars 1830, Charles X menace de sévir. Les députés, par l'« adresse des 221 », refusent de collaborer. Le roi signe et publie dans Le Moniteur quatre ordonnances tendant à supprimer la liberté de la presse et à modifier la loi électorale. C'est une violation de la Constitution ; et c'est la révolution à Paris. En trois jours dits " Trois Glorieuses " les 27, 28 et 29 juillet , les Bourbons sont renversés. Achevé en décembre, le tableau est exposé au Salon de mai 1831. Il semble né d'un seul élan ; mais il découle des études faites pour les oeuvres philhellénistes et d'une recherche nouvelle de détails et d'attitudes. Sur le tableau, c'est l'assaut final. La foule converge vers le spectateur dans un nuage de poussière, brandissant des armes. Elle franchit les barricades et éclate dans le camp adverse. A sa tête, quatre personnages debout. Au centre une femme, déesse mythique, elle les mène à la Liberté. A leurs pieds gisent des soldats. L'image s'érige en monument. La touche emportée et le rythme impétueux sont contenus, équilibrés. Le tableau glorifie le peuple citoyen " noble, beau et grand ". Historique et politique, il témoigne du dernier sursaut de l'Ancien Régime et symbolise la Liberté et la révolution picturale. Réaliste et novateur, le tableau fut rejeté par la critique, habituée à voir célébrer le réel par des concepts. Le régime de Louis-Philippe dont elle saluait l'avènement, le cacha au public. Elle entra en 1863 au musée du Luxembourg et en 1874 au Louvre. Image de l'enthousiasme romantique et révolutionnaire, continuant la peinture historique du XVIIIe siècle et devançant Guernica de Picasso, elle est devenue universelle.-----------------------------.
