Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. I am pleased to offer the following large and thick book titled: "Buffalo Historical Society Publications--Volume Fourteen", edited by Frank H. Severance. I have had this book for a long time but had not realized its significance and how interesting and informative it is!… This book contains: "The Holland Land Co. and Canal Construction in Western New York", including the "Buffalo-Black Rock Harbor Papers- Journals and Documents" published by the Society in 1910. According to the first paragraph of the Introduction: "The present volume consists chiefly of documents bearing on the original construction of the Erie Canal in Western New York, and on the early harbor work at Buffalo and Black Rock. There are also printed here two journals of travel in New York State in the early years of the Canal; a valuable study of the influence of the Erie Canal on the settlement of the West, and sundry other papers. This book is bound with a quarter spine in leather and five raised bands over papered boards. It is ex-library and has many notations of that status although a label on the rear endpaper indicates that it was a "reference" work and presumably did not circulate. This accounts for the clean and very good condition inside. There are just a few illustrations, typically portraits of people involved in the process of the development of the Canal. There are also some maps showing ther progressive settlement west as a result of the Canal. Condition: This book is in very good condition. However, the gutter on the upper half of the spine is splitting on each side and there is quite a bit of rubbing to the edges of the leather portions of the covers. There is a taped-on shelf label and white numbers on the spine. Beyond the many library markings (one of which is a "discard" notice; what were they thinking?), the interior pages of the book are clean and bright, without toning or foxing. Both hinges are intact (the book was sturdily bound) and the binding is tight and sound. P.S. I cannot emphasize too much about the valuable and scarce information about the construction of the Erie Canal which this document contains.
