This beautifully photographed volume presents the 63 known statues of the Bari tribe from South Sudan, offering a comprehensive overview of their collection, usage, and stylistic diversity. Drawing primarily from 19th-century sources alongside modern documentation, it explores the Bari people's historical context along the banks of the White Nile, where they remained isolated until the 19th century. The earliest contact with the outside world began with an expedition commissioned in 1840 by Ismail Pascha, followed by explorations aimed at uncovering the Nile's sources, often hindered by competing slave hunters. The book situates the known collection of Bari statues within the broader historical narrative of Egyptian Sudan, detailing encounters with explorers like Joseph Pons d'Arnaud and Wilhelm Werne in 1841, and concluding with Wilhelm Junker's descriptions of the pre-colonial era. During the 19th century, many museums sought to amass ethnographic objects, relying heavily on explorers, traders, and adventurers. This catalog of approximately 63 Bari statues provides valuable insights into the historical sources and current understanding of their significance, usage, and stylistic variations. The text is presented in both English and French.…

Rilegato. Condizione: new. English and French Text. Milano, 2022; bound, pp. 124, 100 col. ill., cm 22x28. The Bari people, who settled on the banks of the White Nile, remained closed off from the outside world until the dawn of the 19th century. The earliest contact dates back to the "scientific" expedition commissioned in 1840 by Ismail Pascha, followed by repeated forays by explorers in search of the sources of the Nile during the closing decades of the Ottoman period in Egypt, interspersed with the often competing efforts of slave hunters. This book places the collection of Bari statues known today in the historical context of the Egyptian Sudan, from the earliest contacts with explorers Joseph Pons d'Arnaud and Wilhelm Werne in 1841 to the final stages of the pre-colonial era described by Wilhelm Junker. Many museums founded during the 19th century embarked on a frantic scramble to collect ethnographic objects, relying in particular on explorers, but also on traders and adventurers. This book catalogues the roughly 63 Bari statues that are known today and offers a comprehensive overview of historical sources and current knowledge of the Egyptian Sudan that provide the context for these works, their use and stylistic diversity.
