Das Werk erschien ursprünglich im Neuma…nn Verlag in Radebeul und wurde mehrfach überarbeitet und erweitert, unter anderem von Dr. Dieter Schulze. Das Buch gehört zur traditionellen deutschsprachigen Reitlehre. Typisch für die deutsche Reitlehre jener Zeit ist der militärisch-disziplinierte Ton, allerdings verbunden mit dem Ideal des fein ausgebildeten Reitens statt bloßer Härte. "Praktisches Reiten" gehört zu jener Generation von Reitlehrbüchern, die den west- und ostdeutschen Turniersport der Nachkriegszeit prägten.
