The exhibition, organized in collaboration with Villaggio Globale International, the Hermitage Museum, and the Umbria Region, with the patronage of the Municipality of Perugia and the support of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Perugia and Knoll, strengthens the existing bond between the Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria and the Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg: The Washerwoman, a masterpiece by Jean Siméon Chardin from the Hermitage, was exhibited in the Gallery's recently concluded exhibition dedicated to Soap Bubbles; last December, Piero della Francesca's Annunciation of the Virgin Mary, the cymatium of the Polyptych of St. Anthony, was exceptionally loaned by the Perugian Gallery to the Russian museum, which now chooses to celebrate the genius of the great Tuscan artist in his native town. The Benois Madonna, a world-renowned icon, is a key work by the young Leonardo da Vinci. Probably painted between 1478 and 1480, it marks his independence from the style and training of Verrocchio, whose workshop the master had joined about 10 years earlier: a manifesto of the "modern manner" pioneered by the artist. In his second engagement with one of the most widespread religious themes, at the age of twenty-six, the artist broke with tradition and invented a new figure of Mary: no longer the imperturbable Queen of Heaven, but a simple mother playing with her child.
