First edition thus. Thick quarto. Contemporary half red morocco over red pebble-grained cloth boards, ruled in gilt. The spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt and with titles in gilt. All edges gilt. Additional engraved title page and frontispiece portrait. Illustrated with 14 fine full-page engravings after the work of artists including Henry Fuseli, Joshua Reynolds, Robert Smirke, and John Opie, each with its original tissue-guard. A very good copy, the binding square and firm with a little cracking to the front hinge and rubbing to the spine, corners and board edges. The contents with a previous owner's pencil inscription to the front free endpaper, foxing to the preliminary pages (heavier to the half-title, title pages and frontispiece) and some occasional light foxing elsewhere are otherwise in very good order throughout. The plates remain clean and sharp.
