Hardback. Condizione: New. A collection of essays by several scholars, edited by Shalvah Vail, who also appears as Shalva Weil, on the Arabic-speaking Jews who settled in British India. The community's members came from Baghdad, Basra and Mosul, from Syria and Aden, and later from Persia, Bukhara and Afghanistan. The book is organized in parts. The first gives sociological and historical background on the community under the Raj and its passage to Indian independence. The second covers religious life, with chapters on synagogue design and on music in Bombay, and later chapters take up schools, institutions and culture in Bombay, Poona and Calcutta. The editor's opening chapter applies the idea of super-diversity to these cities. It follows the Sassoon family's synagogues and mills, the arrival of refugees around the Second World War, and the move abroad after 1947. Bibliographical references and an index are included.
