With an English preface by Dr. Jas. B. Neal, dated…October 1894, McIlvaine Hospital, Jinan. In the preface, Dr. Neal notes that the book was prepared to make Western ophthalmology accessible to Chinese students and to help train a body of well-educated native practitioners of Western medicine. He also includes a bilingual glossary of ophthalmological terms, aiming toward "a uniform system of terms for use in all medical text-books in China." The text was interpreted orally by Nie Huidong (聶會東) and transcribed by Shang Baochen (尚寶臣) under Dr. Neal's supervision at the McIlvaine Hospital. Based on Norris and Oliver's Text-book of Ophthalmology, the work represents one of the earliest and most representative efforts to introduce modern Western ophthalmology to China through the medical mission network during the late Qing period. It provides a systematic presentation of ocular anatomy, diseases, injuries, and treatment methods, effectively blending Western scientific terminology with the linguistic and conceptual framework of traditional Chinese medicine. Illustrations: Three woodcut plates at the beginning—two showing ophthalmic instruments and one anatomical diagram of the eye—followed by eighteen additional plates containing twenty-nine detailed illustrations depicting the structure of the eye, various injuries and pathological conditions, and surgical procedures. The final two plates present visual acuity test charts. With library markings. Covers show minor soiling and rubbing. The final folding plate with multiple tears along the folds.
