Army in September 1917, learned to fly and arrived on the front in France in July 1918 where he was assigned to the 27th Aero Squadron. In September 1918, He began a personal campaign against German observation balloons and airplanes. At sunset on Sept. 29, 1918, he took off for his usual attack/strafing runs and was downed/killed by German fire. He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor.
