Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. Birder, naturalist and writer, Zafar Futehally was born in 1920 into a business family of Bombay. He grew up in Andheri, then one of the greenest areas of the city and went on to join the family trade. However, it was with Salim Ali, the famed ornithologist also known as the Birdman of India, that Zafar found his true calling. Zafar accompanied Salim Ali on his expeditions and helped him ring birds, collect specimens and take notes. On these field trips, he came in contact with some of the world's foremost naturalists and conservationists - Dillon Ripley, Loke Wan Tho, Richard Fitter and Sir Peter Scott amongst others. These associations helped Zafar develop a nuanced, far-ranging understanding of ornithology as well as of the natural world. This, together with his diplomatic skills, made him a vital consensus-builder on matters relating to conservation. Zafar Futehally spearheaded the conservation movement in India and played a key role in transforming it from a fringe concern of the middle-class to a matter of National importance. Zafar held key posts in all the important conservation organizations and initiatives in India and abroad - BNHS, IUCN, WWF - India and Project Tiger. Witty, humble and deeply thoughtful, The Song of the Magpie Robin is a vibrant portrait of a man of principle, who spent his entire life striving to find a balance between development and nature conservation.…

Hardcover. Condizione: As New. 1st Edition. India is home to over a thousand species of birds ranging from glittering sunbirds, peacocks and pheasants through to unassuming inhabitants of town and countryside like crows, sparrows and pigeons to those that are rare and threatened like the Indian Bustard. In this book, many of them are brought to vivid life by one of the countrys greatest naturalists and nature writers. M. Krishnans prose is studded with evocative descriptions of nature, literary allusions, stylistic flourishes, humour, and most rewardingly, precise observations and original insights into over a hundred species of birds in a variety of habitats. This is a work that will delight bird lovers of every stripe. As Zafar Futehally, one of the countrys best known ornithologists, says in his fore, Every piece in this collection has something even for the seasoned naturalist, and even his description of common events holds your interest because of the writing.…

He wrote on anything that caught his attention, from dog-shows to cricket, local breeds of cattle to temple carvings, squirrels in his backyard to elephants, gaur and mouse deer of the forests. He did not just write occasionally, but wrote steadily and inspiringly for well over 35 years. A pioneer in the field of black and white photography, Krishnan's contribution to wildlife photography and writing on natural history in India has no parallel. In this special compilation, an effort has been made to select lively and anecdotal text for which Krishnan has been recognized, to accompany images that he created which are in a class of their own."
