Prima edizione
Hardcover first edition - First printing. Beginning in A.D. 1000 with Leif Ericson and ending with the dropping of the atomic bomb on Hiroshima in 1945, this book presents - in poetic prose - a searing personal history of the United States, told in almost 200 voices over the years. Sanford later commented about this book that "It was, and it is, an unrelenting and accusatory book. No one who values his country can find its charges easy to bear-and yet I value my country, too, and the book was written only to make it better." It is a book that exposes the rapaciousness and the cruelty and self-interest often underlying our country's history. Sanford was blacklisted by the House for Unamerican Activities in the 1950s and one wonders if this book would find a publisher today. Sanford was also the recipient of the PEN Award and the Los Angeles Times Lifetime Achievement. Among those who influenced his writing were Nathaniel West, William Carlos Williams, Hemingway and James Joyce. 285 pp. Near fine in very good dust jacket (minor toning and sunning to the dust jacket).
