Shortly after the founding of St. Petersburg large numbers of statues, buts and decorative vases were erected in the city whle the facades of its houses were decorated with stucco ornaments and reliefs. With each new decade, sculptural decoration became richer and more varied. Bronze monumnets appeared in the public quares. This entire "musuem of scupture" whose halls are formed by quares, streets, gardens and parks and whose "exhibits" have been created or gathered over a period of almost 300 years has become an integral part of the the artisitic face of the city.
