Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book is an investigation into using the stumps, fat limbs, and pitchy butts of western yellow pines for wood distillation following the Civil War due to a rapid cutting of yellow pine in the South. Previously, western yellow pine was used in California as a source of turpentine during the Civil War. The author discusses methods of utilizing the more resinous portions of the yellow pine of the South in the manufacture of wood-distillation products and suggests the possibility that the western species might serve the same purpose, especially since these trees, especially the stumps, are often quite resinous. The book provides an overview of the distribution of western yellow pine across the western United States, the methods the author used to take samples, and the distillation of those samples. The author also discusses the products obtained in refining crude turpentine, along with the feasibility of distilling western yellow pine. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Corners lightly rubbed, ink name on front flyleaf. 1839 Hard Cover. xxiii, 374 pp. 8vo. Original brown blind-stamped cloth, gilt titles. Translated directly from Pierre Louis's manuscript, the original French version of which was not printed until 1844. The second important volume published on yellow fever, following the effort of Benjamin Rush printed in 1794. Louis was also known for introducing the term 'typhoid fever'. "One more, as in the case of his book on typhoid fever, one must pay homage to Louis for his cool objectivity in handling facts and for his clear analysis of results. The descriptions [of fatal cases] are masterpieces of clarity and precision and would do credit to a modern medical service or autopsy room" (Bloomfield, Bibliography of communicable diseases, 491).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. First Edition. Library of Practical Medicine, Massachusetts Medical Society Vol. X. xxiii, 374 p. 24 cm. Brown cloth hardcover with blank impressing. Spine and corners repaired. Bookplate for Victor Robinson on rear pastedown. Bookplates removed from front endpapers. Endpapers darkened. Occasional thumbing. Pierre Louis (1787-1872), French statistician and physician, is best known for an approach to medicine known as the "numerical system." Louis has been credited with establishing medicine as an exact science by demonstrating the value of the statistical method in diagnostics and therapeutics. For example, by systematically testing the effectiveness of therapeutic blood-letting, Louis demonstrated that the timing and quantity of bloodletting had no impact on the course or mortality of the diseases for which it was used. Little wonder that this report on an 1828 yellow fever epidemic contains so much observation and description; he was radically in favour of empirical research, not theory-based medicine.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Baltimore, tall octavo (10 by 7 inches), variously paged, hundreds of plates and text figures. ***CONTENT: The small State of Maryland is nonetheless noteworthy for its diversity of landscapes: from west to east, the folded Appalachians, the Piedmont Plateau, and the broad Coastal Plain. These volumes document the 19th century history of geological investigations, the physical features and geomorphology of the State, its geological formations, mineral resources, and paleontology. Maryland rock formations range in age from Precambrian to Pleistocene, and produce a noteworthy assortment and diversity of fossils: stromatolites, sponges, corals, trilobites and other arthropods, crinoids, brachiopods, mollusks, fishes, dinosaur remains, shark teeth, whale bones, mammoth and mastodon skeletons, and more. Volumes in this set include: VOLUME ONE (1897), with 539 p. and 17 plates; CAMBRIAN-ORDOVICIAN (1919), with 424 p. and 58 plates; SILURIAN (1923), with 794 p. and 67 plates; DEVONIAN (IN THREE VOLUMES) (1913), with 1436 p. and 171 plates; LOWER CRETACEOUS (1911), with 622 p. and 97 plates; UPPER CRETACEOUS (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1916), with 1022 p. and 90 plates; EOCENE (1901), with 331 p. and 64 plates; MIOCENE (IN TWO VOLUMES) (1904), with 670 p. and 135 plates; and PLIOCENE AND PLEISTOCENE (1906), with 292 p. and 75 plates. The authors that made contributions to these volumes reads like a list of early 20th century "who's who" of the country's most notable geologists and paleontologists. ***CONDITION: These volumes are in VERY GOOD+ TO FINE condition, uniformly bound in the original ribbed green cloth, with gilt lettering on the front covers and backstrips. The covers are well preserved, with only a trace of rubbing to the extremities. All outer joints are solid, as are most inner hinges; the bindings are firm. The text pages and illustrations are near pristine: fresh, clean and bright, with no foxing or dampstains. Most volumes are NOT ex-library, but have former owner's signatures on the front endpapers. Four volumes are signed by Marshall Kay (1904-1975), the celebrated Columbia University geologist. Save for one volume, no external ownership markings. This is a very handsome set of highly informative, profusely illustrated volumes. Domestic and international shipping will be extra, but only at my cost.…
