paperback. 9 x 7.5 (landscape). paperback. 40 pages. John Spilsbury, who styled himself an "Engraver and Map Dissector in Wood, in Order to Facilitate the Teaching of Geography," is credited with the invention of "dissected maps", hand-colored maps, printed from copper plates, which were mounted on thin sheets of mahogany and cu…t into pieces according to the political borders of the region mapped. The discovery of an extraordinary set of five of John Spilsbury's dissected puzzles, and its acquisition by the Cotsen Children's Library has provided a valuable opportunity to reassess Spilsbury's intention and the place of dissected puzzles and other geographical pastimes in the history of education in eighteenth-century Britain. This study of the context in which these puzzles first appeared reveals the extent of the links between the childrens book and map trades in 18th-century London, and sheds new light on the history of progressive British education during that time. "[A] well-documented discussion of (for many readers) an unfamiliar form of publication." T. H. Howard-Hill, University of South Carolina, Editor, The Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America.

paperback. 8.5 x 10.5 inches. paperback. 168 pages. Color photographs, illustrations, and reproductions. Taking as its starting point the set of sixteen dissected maps belonging to the children of George III and acquired by the Cotsen Children's Library, Princeton University, this work examines the new trends in education exempl…ified by the practices of the royal nursery and its governess, Lady Charlotte Finch. The author establishes a relationship between Lady Charlotte and Mme Le Prince de Beaumont, the French governess and author of the Magasin des Enfans (1756). Le Prince de Beaumont is newly identified as the first person to be selling dissected maps, or cartographical jigsaw puzzles, several years before the map seller John Spilsbury. The educational environment in which the royal children played with their educational toys is recreated from a wide range of contemporary sources. Locating these dissected maps within the domestic context of the royal household allows a re-examination of the historiography of the use and development of educational toys. The discussion ranges over new trends in educational theory and practice including the evolution of rational domesticity and the increasing involvement of aristocratic mothers in the care and education of their children. The influence of Mme Le Prince de Beaumont, and Lady Charlotte's upbringing and her place within a circle of intellectual women are examined. A bibliographical history of the individual puzzles is included, as is the delightful text of the Prologues and Epilogues to the 1732 children's performance of Dryden's Indian Emperor, in which Lady Charlotte and her siblings performed and which was recorded by William Hogarth in his painting of The Conquest of Mexico, Act IV, Scene IV, from Dryden's Indian Emperor. The text is reproduced, together with the painting, at the end of the work. Reviews: "This volume is an important contribution to the origins of dissected maps in England, and a useful supplement to the authors earlier work on Spilsbury." Map Forum (Issue 1, Spring 2004). ". a visual delight. Jill Shefrin has produced an enjoyable and unusual book of cultural history. deal[ing] with broad trends in family life (pedagogy, the education of women, and the workings of hierarchy and patronage) and illuminat[ing] them through domestic detail, through unpublished texts, letters by and about children, and through surviving toys and educational games." Paperback. Condizione: New. Posing a challenge to more traditional approaches to the history of education, this interdisciplinary collection examines the complex web of beliefs and methods by which culture was transmitted to young people in the long eighteenth century. Expanding the definition of education exposes the shaky grou…nd on which some historical assumptions rest. For example, studying conventional pedagogical texts and practices used for girls' home education alongside evidence gleaned from women's diaries and letters suggests domestic settings were the loci for far more rigorous intellectual training than has previously been acknowledged. Contributors cast a wide net, engaging with debates between private and public education, the educational agenda of Hannah More, women schoolteachers, the role of diplomats in educating boys embarked on the Grand Tour, English Jesuit education, eighteenth-century print culture and education in Ireland, the role of the print trades in the use of teaching aids in early nineteenth-century infant school classrooms, and the rhetoric and reality of children's book use. Taken together, the essays are an inspiring foray into the rich variety of educational activities in Britain, the multitude of cultural and social contexts in which young people were educated, and the extent of the differences between principle and practice throughout the period.
