Octavo, brown boards (hardcover), gilt letters, 152 pp. Fine in a Very Good dust jacket with sunned spine and light edgewear. From dust jacket: This long-needed and skillfully writeen biography of Dr. John Gorrie depicts the essential character of a man whose name few recognize today but whose bequest most people in the civilized world enjoy. The author paints an unforgettable picture of life in the raw, new, frontier port of Apalachicola where bank failures, fever epidemics, land deals, and cotton prices turned the wheel of her fortunes. Against this background she portrays the reserved young doctor from South Carolina who had, by the time he arrived in the town, already established a prestigious reputuation in the medical world. Although he took part in the day-to-day life of the town, serving as mayor, justice of the peace, and postmaster, he was, even then, dreaming on a grand scale. "Had his contemporaries known the scope of his thoughts they could not have contained their surprise. Far beyond the plight of his fever-ridden patients sweating out the Apalachicola summer, or of the Territory, or even the nation, the dreams he dreamed encompassed mankind and the world." Credit for devising a mechanical method for manufacturing ice and for cooling air has often been assigned to others. Only in recent times have scientists begun to appreciate Dr. Gorrie's contribution to the art of producing cold. Fully documented and indexed.
