This reader, published after World War I, begins with a poem, "The American Boy." It is a dialogue between a father and son about patriotism. According to the author of this reader, the influence of the story "The Poor Little Match Girl" "founded many an orphan home and organized hundreds of societies for relief of the worthy poor," which indicates an emphasis on philanthropy and social work during the era of the Social Gospel.80% of selections taught traditional values."-- Sharon Vincz Andrews ; signature of a youthful Gerald Grout, later a Kansas Ophthalmologist ; GOOD. Revised edition of this British account of the American Civil War; from the library of Philemon Tecumseh Sherman. Octavo, original brown cloth, illustrated with in-text maps and maps at the rear. P.T. Sherman's bookplate to the front free paper beneath his ownership inscription dated July 1938, a few annotations by Sherman throughout the text. In near fine condition with slight bumping to the crown and foot of the spine, light rubbing to the extremities and rear panel. General William Tecumseh Shermanâs son P.T. Sherman was a lawyer in New York, specializing in labor and insurance, and was elected a member of the New York Board of Alderman in the late 1880s. In the early 1900s, he was appointed the New York Commissioner of Labor. He transferred his library to his niece, Eleanor Sherman Fitch, the granddaughter of General Sherman through his eldest daughter, Maria âMinnieâ Ewing Sherman Fitch, before he died. Until now, this book was held at the family estate in Washington County, Pennsylvania. Brigadier-General Sir James Edward Edmonds was an officer of the Royal Engineers in the late-Victorian era British Army who worked in the Intelligence Division, took part in the creation of the forerunner of MI5, and promoted several spy scares. While attending Staff College, Edmonds co-wrote with his brother in law, W. Birkbeck Wood, 'The History of the Civil War in the United States 1861â"1865,' which was well received by reviewers who wrote that the book would be appealing to soldiers and to students of history alike. The book was in print for thirty years and by 1936 was in its fourth edition and was in use at West Point.
