Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. An attractive wartime-era juvenile travel book introducing young readers to the landscapes, history, and culture of Iceland through the adventures of Sigurdur. Written by Alida Visscher Shinn in collaboration with Icelandic educator Gudrun Stephensen, the volume combines engaging narrative with striking black-and-white photographic illustrations depicting Reykjavík, Icelandic farms, waterfalls, glaciers, volcanoes, fishing villages, and everyday life. Particularly memorable are the dramatic full-page photographic frontispiece of Skógafoss and numerous documentary images that capture Iceland during the early 1940s, making the book appealing to collectors of Icelandic history, vintage travel, photography, and children's literature alike. Published by David McKay Company in Philadelphia during World War II, the work represents one of the earlier American juvenile introductions to Icelandic geography and culture. Very Good hardcover. As issued, without a dust jacket. Binding remains sound and square with secure hinges. The pictorial boards retain strong color and attractive photographic panels with light edge wear, gentle rubbing, minor corner bumps, and a small bump with light fraying at the upper rear corner. The interior is clean and highly presentable, with crisp photographs and bright pages. Previous owner's pencil note partially-erased ('To Janet, From Mommy') and light notations are present on the front endpapers but do not affect the text or illustrations. No torn or detached pages observed. Overall a well-preserved example of an uncommon illustrated wartime juvenile title. This is the 1942 first edition/first printing, supported by the copyright page stating 'Copyright, 1942, David McKay Company' with no subsequent printings or later copyright dates noted. The publisher's original pictorial boards were issued without a dust jacket, making this copy complete in its original format. The collaboration between American children's author Alida Visscher Shinn and Icelandic educator Gudrun Stephensen gives the book an uncommon level of cultural authenticity, offering young readers an accurate introduction to Iceland through contemporary photographs and firsthand local knowledge. Alida Visscher Shinn (1904-1993) was an American writer of children's educational and travel books active during the late 1930s and early 1940s. Her works were designed to introduce young readers to the geography, cultures, and daily lives of children in other parts of the world through engaging narratives supported by photographs. In addition to Sigurdur in Iceland (1942), she authored Children of Hawaii (1939), reflecting her interest in presenting foreign cultures in an accessible and respectful manner for American audiences. Her published works are few, but they represent an early effort in multicultural educational literature for children. Gudrun Stephensen was an Icelandic educator and cultural collaborator who worked with Alida Visscher Shinn to ensure the authenticity of Sigurdur in Iceland. While relatively little has been published about her personal life, her contribution is significant: she helped present Icelandic customs, language, and everyday life accurately for English-speaking children at a time when Iceland was little known to most American readers. Her collaboration lends the book an authenticity that distinguishes it from many contemporary juvenile travel books written solely from an outsider's perspective. …
