Hard Cover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. Minor wear to jacket corners. 1948 Hard Cover. 292 pp. "Informal chronicling of California's personality in terms of traits, inherited, adopted and native. Stories of old romances, gambling heritages, the large scale hospitality, the types of messiahs and cults, the pleasures of food and drink, the spirit of fiesta, are combined with material on gold hunting, bandits, hoaxes, real estate, the tendency for self deception, the playtimes of various clubs and groups, the exhibitionism, and the originality in solving problems of public works and civic questions. This traces, from the old land grants and the old families, the roots of California's individuality, independence and pride, and is a pleasant review, in conversational style, of the state's story. One of the numerous California books gauged to the interest generated by the centennial. Of regional appeal largely.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good+. First Edition. (no dust jacket) [light shelfwear, a bit of fading to spine cloth, tiny stain at edge of rear fep]. INSCRIBED with a somewhat hokey gift inscription punning on the recipient's name and SIGNED by the author on the ffep, additionally dated 10/10/39 in his hand. Shippey was a popular Los Angeles newspaper columnist for many years, and also turned out a handful of novels (this was the third of four), set mostly in the fictional Southern California community of "Ourville," probably modeled after Sierra Madre, where he lived for several years. Like this one, the novels generally featured good-hearted but impoverished writers as their protagonists. A dramatization of this novel was presented at the Pasadena Playhouse in 1939, where it ran for 41 performances and set an attendance record. Signed by Author.
