Outstanding first edition of a finely illustrated work on the principal arts and industries in 18th century Japan, featuring several well-defined and detailed printed illustrations. This woodblock-printed set is arranged in five volumes, each covering a specific sector of Japanese industry. - In the first volume, Kimura Kenkado (the scholarly name of Kimura Kokyo, 1736-1802), describes the manufacture of sake. Volume two ranges from stone quarrying to honey-making and the food industry. Volumes three and four provide a detailed description of the fishing industry. By contrast, the final volume describes the manufacture of lime, the production of the famous Imari pottery, textile manufacturing, harvesting seaweed, etc. - The numerous high-quality illustrations reflect historically accurate details. The artist was Shitomi Kangetsu (1747-99), a student of Tsukioka Settei (1710-86). Kangetsu was a ukiyo-e painter who studied the ancient methods of both Chinese and Japanese painting and specialised in landscapes and portraits as well as shunga. These illustrations are rich in perfectly drawn details, with beautiful cursive script to contextualise them. - The blue covers have been lightly embossed with a view of the mountains and the sea, creating a considerable effect. Each volume bears three ownership stamps, two in red and one in black ink. Two of these stamps, the first and the last, are well legible and shed some light on the previous owners of these volumes, namely a private collection named Tenshima/Amashima (reading uncertain) and a book seller named Marutsuji Honten. - A refined and beautifully illustrated print that unites the scholarly production of Kimura Kenkado and Shitomi Kangetsu's artistic ukiyo-e. - Upper cover of the final volume with a little worming.
