His expedition had hard times in California and his involvement with Argüello was at first motivated by practical considerations, since the Spanish Crown did not permit giving aid to Russians. But the pair fell in love, and Rezanov returned to Russia to ask the Tsar for permission to marry Argüello. In the Civil War, he served in various campaigns along the Pacific Coast, and was discharged as a Brigadier General in 1866. Thereafter, he was involved in Idaho railroads and was elected Idaho's Secretary of State in 1892. He returned to Boston in 1896, where he died in 1914 at the age of 88.
