This book, based primarily on archival research, is a contribution to the study of the relations between France and the Netherlands overseas in the nineteenth century. It focuses on those regions of the world where these two nations shared colonial borderlands: the island of St Martin in the Caribbean, the Gold Coast in Africa, and French Guiana and Surinam in South America. The border question in these regions is dealt with in the European context of colonial and international policy, as well as in the local context. The work addresses Franco-Dutch relations in the colonies, but also the interactions with the slaves on St Martin, the peoples of the Gold Coast (Ashanti, Agni of Sanwi, Fanti and Apollonians or Nzema), and the Maroons such as the Boni (Aluku) and the Ndyuka in the Guianese interior. Paperback. Blue and white wraps with green, orange and black lettering; 272 pp.; richly illustrated, chiefly in color. Text in Dutch. "In 1537, amid a violent struggle for power and religion, the last Catholic Archbishop of Norway, Olav Engelbrektsson, fled to the Netherlands of Charles V. On his flight, the prelate took a large part of the treasure from the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim to Deventer : the axe of Saint Olav, two crowns, chalices, monstrances and other valuables. This book follows the trail of the Archbishop, his retinue and the treasures of the church. A long search in archives and museums yields a surprising story about exile, diplomacy and Norwegian heritage in the Habsburg Netherlands at the beginning of the Reformation. Perhaps this story will give rise to new archaeological research into Norwegian church silver on the seabed." -- WorldCat. Hardback. Condizione: New. The Eighty Years War offers an insight into the military factors at play in the creation of the Dutch Republic. In 1648 the Spanish empire agreed to a peace treaty that ended decades of fighting and resulted in the division of the Low Countries and the birth of the Republic. From the outset, the conflict between the Dutch insurgents and their Spanish sovereign lord captured the imagination. As a result of eighty years of warfare, the provincial States and the Calvinists gained the upper hand in the north and the Spanish rulers and the Catholic church in the south. Against all expectations, Philip II and his successors failed to win a conclusive victory over their rebellious Dutch subjects; in the end Spain was compelled to admit military defeat at the negotiating table in Münster and recognise the breakaway Dutch provinces as a sovereign state. The birth of the new state was to no small degree determined by the balance of military power on land and at sea, and this book, illustrated in colour throughout, brings together all aspects of our country's military history for the first time. Filling a gap in current scholarship, The Eighty Years War investigates the relationship between maritime and land-based developments in the fields of weapons technology, tactics and organisation in the period from 1568 to 1648.…
