Al Haig, Sen. Chuck Grassley, Iowa Governors Terry Branstad and Robert D. Ray. The first caucus of the 1988 Republican presidential contest was held in Iowa on February 8, 1988. Bob Dole finished first, followed by Pat Robertson and Vice President Bush, while former Secretary of State Haig received less than one percent of the vote. Grassley supported Dole and campaigned extensively on his behalf. Despite his third-place Iowa finish, Bush went on to win the Republican nomination and the presidency.
