Wraps and slipcase protected by modern mylar. Fabulously designed book by the German pharmaceutical company Madaus, published to commemorate their 50th anniversary. Profusely illustrated with over 100 b/w reproductions of photographs (many in photomontage) by Barbara Schulten, 4 color illustrations, and a total of 12 pop-up inserts, tipped-in ephemera, pull-out tabs, and pop-up figures. Includes 16 1/2" x 22" color fold-out poster of an 1930's advertisement. One fold-out illustrated with a mouse in a science lab, when opened an accordion-style pop-up creates the noise of a shrieking mouse. 8 page booklet "Haussegen! Ein Kochbuch von Frau Pastor Madaus", as well as reader-reply card laid-in, as issued. The 'Pop Art' layout and design of the work shows similarities to Andy Warhol's 1967's 'Index Book'. "Madaus, founded in 1919, is one of the world's leading producers of pharmaceuticals, particularly those produced from plants, and the book extols the virtues of homeopathy and the social role of developing new drugs to fight disease. Not only a cornucopia of design and layout ideas, it features several pop-up pages in the style of a children's book. The result combines a high purpose with a sense of fun, as if the customers of Madaus - institutions used to dealing with the question of man's mortality - could benefit from an injection of laughter into the serious business of medical research." (Parr & Badger II: 196). Slipcase with slight rubbing on head and tail of spine and edges. Tiny closed tear on top right corner of slipcase. Text in German. Tight copy in very good condition. Complete with all pop-ups, as issued. One of the best designed and most innovative publications of company photobooks.
