Siegfried Thannhauser (1885-1962), der einer alten angesehenen jüdischen Münchner Kaufmannsfamilie entstammt, hat an der Klinik von Friedrich von Müller in München mit experimentellen Untersuchungen zum Stoffwechsel der Homogentisinsäure, einem Abbauprodukt der Aminosäure Tyrosin, promoviert. An der gleichen Klinik hat er dann nach dem Studium seine Ausbildung zum Internisten erhalten. Die experimentelle Arbeit bei der Promotion hat ihn so sehr fasziniert, daß er seinem Medizinstudium ein Studium der Chemie bei Adolf von Bayer und Hans Fischer anschloß. In der folgenden Zeit als Assistent und Oberarzt an der Münchner Klinik unter Friedrich von Müller entstanden wichtige Arbeiten zum Stoffwechsel der Purine und der Pathogenese der Gicht. Auch die Glukosebelastung zur Erkennung des latenten Diabetes und der Nachweis des Cholesterinesthersturzes" als Zeichen einer Leberfunktionsstörung gehen auf Siegfried Thannhauser zurück. Schon mit 38 Jahren wurde Thannhauser als Direktor der Medizinischen Poliklinik nach Heidelberg berufen, 6 Jahre später übernahm er die Professur für Innere Medizin und die Leitung der neu erbauten Medizinischen Klinik an der Universität Freiburg. In die Freiburger Zeit fallen seine wissenschaftlichen Untersuchungen über Lipide und Lipoidosen, deren diagnostische Einteilung nach biochemischen Kriterien von ihm erstmals dargestellt wurde. Es war tragisch für Siegfried Thannhauser und für die wissenschaftliche Medizin in Deutschland, daß die Freiburger Zeit für Thannhauser nur kurz währte. Der Zwang zur Emigration im Juni 1935 hat ihn schwer getroffen. In Boston hat sich der 50-jährige mit Unterstützung amerikanischer Freunde und der Rockefeller Foundation eine neue Existenz aufgebaut. Das New England Medical Center wurde ein führendes diagnostisches und therapeutische Institut in den USA. Thannhauser hat hier vor allem seine Untersuchungen über Lipoide weitergeführt. Thannhauser hat zeitlebens seine ärztliche Aufgabe als seinen eigentlichen Beruf angesehen.
