Paperback edition, published by Faber & Faber, 1983. Memoir that covers the years 1916-1920, from his World War I experience to the beginnings of his literary career. 224 pages, 5" X 8". This is a UK paperback edition. No writing, no former ownership marks. A few spots of edge ear, but no creases to the cover or spine. Age tanning to the text pages, a small spot of age tanning to the top edge of the text block. Not a library discard copy. We have more Seigfried Sassoon books listed too. Attached photos are of the copy we have in our inventory.

Published in 1920 by Thornton Butterworth, these books belonged to Nellie Burton, a good friend of Sassoon, before he eventually obtained them. Miss Nellie Burton was Housekeeper to Robert Ross. Ross liked to entertain his friends in the evening at his suite of rooms at Half Moon Street, near the Ritz in London. Ross's rooms were single gentlemen's apartments supervised by Miss Nellie Burton who had been maid to Ross's mother. Nellie knew that her gentlemen were part of London's homosexual network and jealously safeguarded their privacy. In 1916 Ross took Sassoon to meet Lady Ottoline Morrell at her mansion, 'Garsington', near Oxford. There he met many pacifists including Bertrand Russell, who were to have a great effect on his thinking. These two volumes have Nellie Burton's ownership stamp on the inside front cover. They later went into Sassoon's library as indicated by the Sotheby's provenance labels in both copies. From the Library of Siegfried Sassoon and Sold by Sotheby's in 1991. Books are very good++ and quite bright. Contents good. The wrapper's vary in condition. Volume 1 wrapper has major loss and tears to edges but has been laminated to acetate to stabilize it. Volume 2 is very good++ and bright. Light edge rubbing. More images can be taken upon request. Ref18087.
