Wallace Earle Stegner moved around a lot, his autobiography claimed "twenty places in eight states and Canada", mostly in the West. At the University of Utah he was required to choose a major, one economics course made him change it. He related that his professors urged him to go to graduate school, after earning his BA at Utah in 1930 he added an MA from the University of Iowa in 1932. He taught at the University of Wisconsin and Harvard before settling in at Stanford where he developed the creative writing program. He became an advocate for wilderness and preservation issues, he was assistant to Stewart Udall at the Dept. of the Interior and a director of the Sierra Club.
