Magazine. Condizione: Fair. Illustrated by (cover photo) Pierluigi (illustratore). (Vol. 2, No. 1). [a reading/reference copy only; the magazine had obviously gotten wet at some point, and is therefore wrinkled and rippled throughout -- although not stained, or smelly, or otherwise blemished, apart from a small price-sticker-removal scar on the front cover]. (B&W photographs) The feature stories in this issue are: an article by James Silke entitled "Attack," billed as "an analysis of the new cinema and its Hollywood beginnings"; an interview with Jean Renoir; mostly-photographic features on the films WHAT A WAY TO GO! and BEHOLD A PALE HORSE (Fred Zinnemann); a 6-page "picture essay" (all full-page photos) on Sophia Loren; and an interview with actor Karl Malden. There are also numerous movie reviews of current releases (fairly brief), and a section of newsy items, heavily photo-illustrated. [We have numerous issues of this and other film-related periodicals that are not listed online; please inquire if you have particular needs or wants.].

Periodical. Condizione: Very Good. (Vol. 1, No. 2). [some scuffing/rubbing to covers, moderate wear along spine, very slight damage at very top of spine; still a decent, clean copy]. (B&W photographs, graphics) The second issue of a publication that eventually (after some growing pains and various format changes) would become one of the leading American critical film journals of its day, producing a total of 35 issues before petering out in the mid-1970s. The editorial note on the first page indicates that the magazine was still trying to define the "selective film audience" to which it was purportedly targeted, and (like with the debut issue) its heavily photographic design overwhelms its somewhat thin editorial content. The features of this issue, such as they are, are primarily pictorial: "The Female Trilogy of Boccaccio 70" (featuring mini-profiles of Anita Ekberg, Romy Schneider, and Sophia Loren); a two-page spread on TARAS BULBA; a somewhat silly feature, "Noble Nancy Noble," a lame photo-parody of silent serials; a 5-page photo profile of Yvette Mimieux, basically five big closeups with minimal text; a feature on World War I movies; an interview with Curtis Harrington about his film NIGHT TIDE; a synopsis of WAR HUNT, Denis and Terry Sanders' Korean War drama; a 3-page spread (one page text, two pages photos) on CLEOPATRA, then in production; a short essay (again with lots of photos) on Brigitte Bardot, "The Tragic Mask of Bardolatry." There are brief (single-column) "previews" of 19 upcoming films.

Periodical. Condizione: Very Good+. (Vol. 2, No. 5). [nice clean copy, but slightly wrinkled as though it might have absorbed a little moisture at some time (but NOT stained or damaged apart from the wrinkling]. (B&W photographs) The last issue of this magazine to appear under the guidance of its original editor, James Silke (who would be suceeded by Curtis Hanson beginning with the next issue), and like many of its predecessors it's kind of a mishmash, reflecting the publication's fitful efforts to find its footing during its first couple of years. There's some serious cineaste-y content here, including: interviews with directors Richard Brooks and Serge Bourguignon (themed around their then-current films LORD JIM and THE REWARD); a piece by critic Raymond Durgnat on serials; a "Point of View" column by not-yet-a-director Peter Bogdanovich (in which he writes about Sam Fuller's THE NAKED KISS and reviews Josef von Sternberg's autobiography); serious-minded interviews with Anthony Perkins, Richard Harris, and Richard Widmark; and an appreciation of the 1932 film THE MUMMY. However, this particular issue also leans rather heavily on the pretty-ladies formula, including a full-page inside-front-cover shot of Jeanne Moreau and Brigitte Bardot yukking it up, a 7-page photo feature, "The Girls," highlighting "seven young Hollywood beauties who rival Europe's best" (which resembles nothing so much as a Playboy "Girls of" spread, but in black-and-white and without the nudity), and a photo-heavy 15-page survey of current European and American cinema, again focused largely on the actresses (with more than a little cheesecake).

Periodical. Condizione: Very Good. (Vol. 1, No. 1). [some scuffing/rubbing to covers, moderate wear along spine, very slight damage at very top of spine; still a decent, clean copy]. (B&W photographs, graphics) The debut issue of what eventually (after some growing pains and various format changes) became one of the leading American critical film journals of its day, producing a total of 35 issues before petering out in the mid-1970s. The first issue looks more than a bit tentative, however; an editorial note describes it as "a graphic magazine of information on the diverse world of film entertainment," but its graphic design overwhelms its very thin editorial content. The features of this issue, such as they are, are primarily pictorial: "On Location with LAWRENCE OF ARABIA"; "The Pagan Bardot," a rather silly feature with drawings (by Guy Deel) of Brigitte Bardot costumed (or not) as various legendary ladies (Cleopatra, Theodora, Venus, etc.); a 7-page spread on EL CID; a two-page spread about John Cassavetes, with a few pithy quotes but not much else; a pictorial feature on the women characters' costumes in KING OF KINGS; brief "previews" of 16 upcoming releases. It's worth mentioning that noted photographer William Claxton is credited on the masthead as "Feature Photographer," although the magazine contains only one photograph (a sort of artsy shot of Cassavetes) attributed to him. n/a (illustratore). Very Good + First Edition Printing Not Spec. 8vo = over 9" Very Good + DJ 317pp Red cloth covers. Silver dj w/yellow and orange stars on front. Illustrated w/color and b/w photos. "They made the best movies, they made the worst movies. But whether the movie starred Cagney or Bogart, Muni or Flynn, Davis or de Haviland; whether the marquee said Casablanca or Captain Blood, Don Juan or Dark Victory, it was unmistakably a Warner Bros picture, and the lines at the box office usually stretched around the block. Now James R. Silke documents the wild, dramatic history of how three brothers named Harry, Sam and Jack rose from a family homestead in Krasnostow, Poland, to a duchy in Hollywood; how they went from bicycles to Kinetoscopes to the first talking picture, to a look in films that became their trademark." 0-316-79131-8.
