Nel 1919 la cosiddetta legge Sacchi aboliva l'istituto dell'autorizzazione maritale che consentiva alle donne sposate la gestione dei propri beni e a tutte le donne l'accesso alle professioni e agli impieghi…pubblici. Tale misura fu pressoché l'unica vittoria ottenuta dal femminismo in età liberale, che poco dopo, grazie a un regolamento attuativo, vedeva restringersi la portata innovativa della norma. Privilegiando un'ottica di lungo periodo e un confronto con altre realtà nazionali, il volume guarda alla sfera giuridica, ai sistemi normativi e alle pratiche delle donne come luoghi della costruzione delle identità di genere e del cambiamento nei rapporti tra i sessi. Il complesso negoziato tra culture giuridiche e culture delle donne ha nel tempo prodotto importanti cambiamenti nelle vite femminili, ma ha anche mostrato i ritardi tra i paesi e le contraddizioni del diritto con le sue eccezioni e discrezionalità.
