Paperback. Condizione: New condition. First Printing (so stated). Reno & Las Vegas: University of Nevada Press, 2010. New and unread in near PERFECT condition with only a tiny bit of very mild shelfwear (like you sometimes find in any new book store). NO chips, tears, creases or fading. Bright and shiny. Sharp corners. NOT a remainder. We have only this one copy, but it is available now and ready to ship today from Henderson, Nevada. Pages are fresh, crisp, clean and unmarked. Bound in the original mostly purple wraps. From the publisher: "The remarkable economic growth of Las Vegas between 1980 and 2007 created a population boom and a major increase in the ethnic and religious diversity of the city. Today, over 21 percent of the city's population is foreign born, and over 30 percent speak a language other than English at home. More Peoples of Las Vegas extends the survey of this city's cosmopolitan residents begun in The Peoples of Las Vegas (University of Nevada Press, 2005). As in the previous book, this volume includes both well-established groups like the Irish and Germans, and recently arrived immigrants like the Ethiopians and Guatemalans. Essays describe the history of each group in Las Vegas, the roles they play in the life and economy of the city, and the role of local institutionsincluding clubs, religious organizations, shops, restaurants, and newspapers and other media -- in helping them maintain their ethnic and religious identities and disseminate their national and even regional cultures. The essays also discuss the influence of modern telecommunications and accessible air travel in allowing newcomers to create transnational identities and maintain ties with families and culture back home. More Peoples of Las Vegas adds to our awareness of their rich ethnic and religious character of Las Vegas. In a broader context, it offers thoughtful perspectives on the impact of globalization on a major American city and on the realities of immigrant life in the twenty-first century." GoodReads rarting: 4.00 stars. First Printing (so stated). Softcover. New condition. xxii, 258pp. Great Packaging, Fast Shipping.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Neuware - Through the chaos, through her tears, through the spinning madness, she saw the end of the fuselage over her right shoulder. Where there should have been rows of seats and the forward galley, there was nothing. At 35000 feet, every decision bears the weight of potential disaster. When a Boeing 747 is torn apart over the Persian Gulf, that's exactly what happens. Flying his own jumbo jet with half a plane hurtling towards him, the instinctive and unorthodox Jonny Masters has seconds to devise a plan. What he pulls off shouldn't be possible - and yet, he does it. With hundreds of lives saved, the world crowns him a hero. But miracles carry a price. In the post-crash investigations, Jonny's decisions are dissected and his past is quietly scrutinised. Then, he simply disappears. No trial. No headlines. Just silence.Far from the spotlight in the shadows of Colombia, a different life begins. Drawn into the orbit of powerful drug cartels, Jonny's rare skills make him valuable - and dangerous. Survival takes on new meaning in a world where loyalty is currency and mistakes are fatal.Fast-paced and visceral, Final Descent is a story of instinct, survival and redemption - proving that even after the fall, a man can still rise.…

Taschenbuch. Condizione: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Taking an interdisciplinary approach and focusing on the social and psychological resources that promote resilience among forced migrants, this book presents theory and evidence about what keeps refugees healthy during resettlement. The book draws on contributions from cultural psychiatry, anthropology, ethics, nursing, psychiatric epidemiology, sociology and social work.Concern about immigrant mental health and social integration in resettlement countries has given rise to public debates that challenge scientists and policy makers to assemble facts and solutions to perceived problems. Since the 1980s, refugee mental health research has been productive but arguably overly-focused on mental disorders and problems rather than solutions. Social science perspectives are not well integrated with medical science and treatment, which is at odds with social reality and underlies inadequacy and fragmentation in policy and service delivery. Research and practice that contribute to positive refugee mental health from Canada and the U.S. show that refugee mental health promotion must take into account social and policy contexts of immigration and health care in addition to medical issues. Despite traumatic experiences, most refugees are not mentally ill in a clinical sense and those who do need medical attention often do not receive appropriate care. As recent studies show, social and cultural determinants of health may play a larger role in refugee health and adaptation outcomes than do biological factors or pre-migration experiences. This book's goal therefore is to broaden the refugee mental health field with social and cultural perspectives on resilience and mental health.…
