[From Introduction] The Silver Creek site was first officially visited in 1941, in a survey by the present director of the San Bernardino County Museum, Gerald A. Smith and an associate, Ritner Sayles. It was entered as SBCM-105 in the museum records and was described on the survey record forms as a, "village with black dirt and probably some deposit . . . vandalized now . . .(with) circular house pits, stone lined pits for roasting pine cones, bedrock mortars, shell beads, black paint stone, arrowpoints, metates, mano, pestle, shell, arrowshaft straightener, pottery sherds, circular pottery disks, cairns of stone on trail up to Pine trees." Under the heading "Remarks", Smith noted, "A good village site worth careful excavation if the destruction from vandals has not been too extensive (Smith 1963)." In December of 1972, students in my New World Prehistory class brought the site to my attention. One of them, a local resident, had been told of it by a "collector". Spurred by a naive enthusiasm, he and three others wished to "excavate" it. The desire to prevent possible well intentioned destruction of archaeological resources, as well as to expose the students to sore of the physical and mental rigors of archaeology, and to establish a nucleus of trained personnel to aid in future work engendered by Environmental Impact demands - all suggested that the site warranted inspection. . .
