In un contesto segnato da straordinaria vitalità creativa e da crescenti tensioni storiche, l'impresa anticipò sviluppi destinati a incidere profondamente sull'arte del Novecento. "Nonostante abbia vita breve, la galleria svolge un ruolo essenziale nel plasmare il contesto culturale del paese negli anni che precedono la Seconda guerra mondiale" proponendosi come "alternativa radicale" al conservatorismo istituzionale.
