De Ilias van Homerus, het grote epos over de oorlog van Grieken en Trojanen, is misschien wel het beroemdste heldendicht in de wereldliteratuur. Ontstaan in de late achtste eeuw voor Christus op basis van mondeling overgeleverde poëzie, beslaat het epos een periode die reikt van de ondergang van de Myceense beschaving in de twaalfde eeuw voor Christus tot het begin van de archaïsche tijd in ongeveer 700 voor Christus. In de beelden van het homerische epos vindt de oorlogvoering van die tijd haar neerslag. Tegelijkertijd houdt het de toehoorders voor ogen hoe te handelen in een oorlog. Door deze lange geschiedenis loopt als een rode draad dat ?de besten?, dat wil zeggen zij die het beste bewapend en geoefend zijn, voor hun mindere landgenoten als ware kampioenen de strijd moeten voeren. Deze opvatting karakteriseerde naar alle waarschijnlijkheid al de zwaarbewapende wagenstrijders uit de Myceense tijd, vervolgens de vaak individualistisch of in kleine groepjes optredende helden van het homerische epos en ten slotte de hoplieten of zwaargewapende burgermilities van de opkomende Griekse stadstaten. Op deze wijze heeft de Ilias eeuwenlang, zelfs tot in de tijd van Alexander de Grote, invloed uitgeoefend op de praktijken en de normen van de oorlogvoering in Griekenland. (Publisher'information).

Op een zakelijke, gedetailleerde manier wordt hier de oorlogvoering behandeld in de periode van ca. 600 v.C.-ca. 400 v.C. Besproken wordt hoe de oorlog wordt aangekondigd en vervolgens uitbreekt, hoe men dan op mars gaat en wat er meegenomen wordt, welke offers er gebracht worden, hoe men de aanval begint en hoe die eindigt. Voortdurend wordt gewezen op de verschillen tussen Sparta en de andere stadstaten. Indringend wordt het verloop van de slag geschilderd alsmede het lot van de slachtoffers. Het boek geeft overigens niet alleen inzicht in de oorlogvoering sec, maar ook in de rol van de oorlog in de toenmalige samenleving. Het ritueel begraven van de doden speelde bijvoorbeeld een wezenlijke rol. Zwart-witillustraties en een katern kleurenfoto's, waaronder reconstructietekeningen, zijn een functionele aanvulling op de tekst. (Publisher's information).

Ofschoon ook hier de stijl niet flonkert en er af en toe wel wat erg beknopt op relevante gebeurtenissen wordt ingegaan, geeft hun werk een goed inzicht in denken en doen van onze antieke voorouders. Sterker dan bij het Britse duo worden maatschappelijke dwarsverbanden aangegeven, krijgen belangrijke sociaal-wetenschappelijke aspecten aandacht. Ook komen zaken als ecologie en de positie van de vrouw veel beter aan bod. Kern van de studie vormt de periode tussen 500 vóór en 1000 na Christus. Op zich is dat niet nieuw, maar wel het ongewoon brede historische kader waarin de beide auteurs dat anderhalve millennium plaatsen: vanaf het paleoliticum (1,4 miljoen jaar v. Chr.) tot en met de opkomst van de islam (ca. 700 na Chr.). Ook betrekken Naerebout en Singer Noord-Afrika en Azië terecht nadrukkelijk in hun evaluatie.
