From Preface: It is rare for a wobbly vessel to get what he thinks is a safe chance to stick his head into the wide-open Bengal jaws of professional bibliography. The presentation of this bibelot to the round world has some of that activity in it. The outstanding scholars and bibliographers who have labored hard on trying to dientify the first Huck Finn are too well known to the guild, it seems to me, to need naming in the text. The ordinary scholar is spared that extra cargo. If an occaisional reader should get curious about the erratic 1884-1885 manufacture of Huck Finn, he will find the bibliographical chase after it easy, for the published views, however fervid and complex, are neither extensive nor bulky as yet.
