Condizione: FINE. Reprint. Originally published as a monthly serial from October 1867 to May 1868 in St Paul's Magazine, and in book form in 1869, this is the second of the "Palliser" series of novels, here reissued in a uniform format. This deals with "both British parliamentary politics of the 1860s, including voting reform (secret ballot and eliminating rotten boroughs and Irish tenant-right) and Finn's romances with women of fortune, which would secure his financial future." Preface by Sir Shane Leslie, illustrations by T. L. B. Huskinson . Notes and a "who's who." 367 pp. Fine in brown cloth in a very good dust jacket (chip to top edge, some other edgewear).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. This is "Phineas Finn" by Anthony Trollope. It is the Oxford University Press hardcover edition, issued in 1977, and is embellished with the line drawings of T. L. B. Huskinson. The book has an introduction by Shane Leslie. A small impression on the rear cover tells us that this is a book club edition. "Phineas Finn" is the second of Trollope's 'Palliser Novels', and is a thorough satirical send-up (but a joyously sympathetic one) of Parliamentary Politics and English societal culture that formed around Politics. Politics with a capital P were close to Trollope's heart, and in this novel he brings a clear view of Parliamentary shennanigans to the surface. SERIES : The Palliser Novels (No. 2) TITLE : Phineas Finn (bound as 2 volumes in one) AUTHOR : Anthony Trollope (1815 - 1882) PREFACE : Sir Shane Leslie (Sir John Randolph Leslie, 3rd Baronet, 1885 - 1971) Leslie was an Anglo-Irish diplomat and writer who championed Home Rule for Ireland. He was a first cousin of Sir Winston Churchill. NOTES & WHO'S WHO : R. W. Chapman (at the end of the book) ILLUSTRATIONS : T. L. B. Huskinson IMPRINT : Oxford University Press PLACE : Oxford DATE : (1977) EDITION : Third Printing - Issued through a Book Club (a wee stamped impression on the rear cover indicates this) DETAILS : Hardcover Book; approximately 4 7/8" x 7 1/4", brown, cloth-covered boards and spine with gilt lettering against a red panel on the spine; top text-block edge dyed dark brown; contains a Preface and line illustrations; vermillion endpapers; 705 pages. CONDITION -- BOOK : VERY GOOD --- JACKET : VERY GOOD -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and presentable, with the following particulars noted : BOOK CLUB ISSUE. EXTERIOR -- Boards and spine have good color and negligible wear; gilt lettering is bright; text-block top edge is somewhat rubbed, else edges are clean. BINDING -- The book has obviously been read, and thus the text-block is not as tight as when issued, however, the binding remains solid, with no detached or loose leaves. INTERIOR -- A small number of creased leaf tips, else the interior is clean and free of marking. No signatures. DUST-JACKET -- Modest wear to jacket edges (chipping and nicking - most obvious at the spine panel extremities; front flap has a crease to the lower corner tip - else jacket is crisp and clean with but near-negligible signs of handling. T. L. B. Huskinson (illustratore).…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Good+. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. Green cloth covers with blue lettering on spine. The covers are a bit soiled and scuffed and the spine is slightly cocked. The paper is of cheaper quality - the book appears to have been privately printed; there's no publisher given. There's browning and a bit of discoloration to the end pages and the page edges but the binding is tight. Off-white dust jacket with unidentified portrait on front cover and portrait of Maher on front flap with a review of the book. The dust jacket is a bit soiled and worn. ; First published in Autumn 1954, this reprint was done in Spring 1955. Slievenamon is the famous mountain in County Tipperary, rich in mythology, history and folklore. Charles Kickham romantized the mountain in song and in his book, "Knocknagow." The review on the dust jacket flap states that Kickham depicts the Knocknagow of fiction but Maher in his anthology depicts the Slievenamon of history. Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. xv, 167 p.; 19 cm. -- First printing of Newman's previously unpubl. 'The changed Mother' from Oct. 21, 1845 (not in Blehl) On pages 117-119: 'The Bodleian Library preserves the original and unprinted poem which was written by Newman within a fortnight of his conversion, dated from his old college and sent to Mark Pattison, among whose papers it was found. It gives the impression that he had received a very cold welcome on returning from Littlemore to the haunts he had once dominated. It also supplies an interpretation of the angel faces at the close of Lead, Kindly Light. To his intense and sensitive nature they reflected his beloved friends.' THE CHANGED MOTHER [stanzas 1-2, 10-11, 14-16] So Oxford, once thy dear old towers / Again to-day I see, / Each time looks like the last, tho' oft / I yet may visit thee. // But thou art changed, my Mother dear, / On me why look'st thou so? / I scarce did think thy ancient smile / Could clouded be with woe. / . . / Changed Mother! brethren yet I have, / Beloved like my own brother,-- / But those my angels sweet, will go,-- / Of them too thou art Mother. // Good-bye! changed Mother, oh good-bye! / We part not in unkindness: / I half began these silly words / In anger--'twas my blindness. / . . / I know there is one Mother yet / (Changed Mother! dost thou not know?) / Who never bade a sorrowing child / In hopeless sorrow go. // I know that I am not alone / Her prayers ascend each hour-- / I think, oh, thou my soul doth love! / She hath thy Heavenly dower. // Oh, Blessed Lord! may I and mine / Be with the One True Mother: / Then what thou wilt--to gift of thee / I cannot ask another! / Trin. Coll., / Oct. 21, 1845. Good dull, edgeworn orig. orange cloth. Ink marking on p. 114.…

Aggiungi al carrelloThe four letters are in good condition, lightly aged and worn. Each 1p., 12mo. The first three letters are written to Brooks, as editor of 'Truth'; the fourth is a letter of condolence to Brooks's wife. In the first letter (14 April 1945) he apologises for the delay in sending in a review: 'I have been two months out of the country and nothing could be forwarded.' He adds: 'I wish I saw more of Charles Webster. He is one of my very few surviving friends of Cambridge days.' The second letter (5 July 1945) begins: 'News has been so earthy of the earth lately that I think a good ghost story would thrill your readers'. He is enclosing 'a few lines of Introduction', and suggests that Brooks edits the story down. Postscript: 'Put his signature by all means.' The third letter (6 March 1948) congratulates Brooks on his book, and thanks him 'for Stefan Zweig which I will read & review next week'. The last (7 April 1959) is a letter of condolence to Brooks's wife. 'It recalls to me many visits to the offices of Turth. It was always a pride and a please to contribute to columns edited by Collin Brooks. Quid est veritas? will be his epitaph'. Accompanying the four letters is a Typed Letter Signed from Brooks to Leslie, 14 February 1945, on letterhead of "Truth" Buildings, Carteret Street, Quyeen Anne's Gate, London. (There is nothing to indicate that the letter is a copy.) He apologises for 'a breach of etiquette', sends a book to review ('To "Make the page" in any given week, reviews must reach me not later than the Monday this because we have now to print in the country.') He concludes with an enquiry after 'our common friend, C. K. Webster'.…
