"'Bokhara Burnes,' a relative of the Scottish poet Robert Burns, joined the East India Company as a teenager, and learned Hindustani and Persian while serving as an interpreter. He climbed the ladder in the Company and then in service of the British Army, eventually traveling through the Hindu Kush to modern-day Uzbekistan and Iran. He published a best-selling narrative of his journeys, 'Travels to Bokhara,' and was awarded a medal by the Royal Geographical Society. Burnes returned to India as a diplomat before precipitating colonial intrigue in Afghanistan as part of 'The Great Game,' where he was then assassinated prior to the first Anglo-Afghan War, but only after killing six assailants. 'Cabool,' a 'casual and informal account of life at Kabul,' in which Burnes gives 'geographical, agricultural, political, and linguistic information' that 'exceed usual interest' describes his second journey to Afghanistan from 1836-1838 and was posthumously published.
