The book starts at pages 11/12, then 13/14 is missing, and then the book restarts at page 15. Page 431/432 is damaged with much of the margins worn away affecting some of the text. Page 658 (which is in the Table section) is completely blank without text, but it is not clear whether it was deliberately blank or a manufacturing fault. The pags following 768, (769/70, 771/72, 773/74, 775/76, ) are completely blank and the text restarts on page 801, under the heading Pictures and Frames. There is no evidence of pages torn out so it is unclear what happened to pages 777/78 and 779/80 which would complete the pagination. The last page of the index pages 989/90 is also missing. This venerable old cookbook appeared in 1895 according to on-line sources. From on-line pictures, I believe this is the 1901 edition. On the on-line references, the title page indicates that this book was sold by subscription only. There was also a coloured title page which read: Smiley's Cook Book and Universal Household Guide, a comprehensive collection of recipes and useful information pertaining to every department of housekeeping. This book is lacking pages, as noted, the book is disbounded, with the front cover detached, and the rear cover and the spine, together, but detached from the body of the book. The body of the book has separated into two parts. The margins on the section on baking and icings are especially worn. There are cooking spots here and there throughout the cooking sections. The covers re spotted. Sold as-is, becasue of its rarity, in its Poor condition; no dust jacket perhap as published. 23 x 15.5 cm, black cloth with embossed titles to the front cover, floral patterned endpapers, originally 990 pp, I count 5 colour plates in this copy (but I am unsure how many plates were in the book): 1. facing page 145 Meats; 2. facing page 209 Salads; 3. facing page 233, Mushrooms; 4. facing page 473 Some Table Fruits; 5. facing page 505 Pudding and Desserts. As well, there are many small B&W line illustrations in the text showing things such as Branch of Chocolate Tree, Calf's Head (Hw to carve), Chervil and other culinary herbs. The firt and greater part of the book is devoted to cookery and recipes: Meats, Fish, Breads, Salads, Pastries, Puddings, Cakes, Home Candy Making, Cooked Fruits, Preserves, Bills of Fare, Garnishing Food. The Ltter part of the book is devoted to household management and home tips: Carving, Folding Napkins, the K|itchen, Kettles and Vessels, The Icehouse "Put a foot or more of sawdust on the floor before packing in any ice", Beds and the Bedroom ("Use a small nirror to dect dampness in a bed") ("When bedsteads creak, at each movement of the occupant, they cn be silenced by taking out the salts and wrapping the ends in paper"), Furniture, Medical Hints ("Snoring: If the nose is stopped up at night, clear it out well, using snuff f necessary." ) ("Hair Falling out: Wet the head occassionally with salt and water and it will check it"), Keeping Provisions, The Composition of Food.
