The novel concerns two flatmates, Maria and Julia. Julia was reportedly modelled on Ingrid Jonker. Berta Smit was Ingrid's supervisor when she worked at Citadel Press and the two were intimately acquainted. The novel was published not long before Jonker's suicide and, significantly enough, features a drowning at a Cape Town beach. 181pp unmarked. Signed by Smit to title page. Binding fine.
