It captures his authentic and unsuppressed voice, speaking clearly from the grave and brimming with humor, ideas, and opinions. This volume 2 weaves together his recollections of family, friends and colleagues with candid critques of contemporary society --many of which he considered too provocative to be published in his own lifetime. This volumes starts in April 1906 and ends in February of 1907. (5.0 JM 1005 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾".

DESCRIPTION - Hailed as the capstone of Twain's career, it captures his authentic and unsuppressed voice, speaking clearly from the grave and brimming with humor, ideas, and opinions. This eagerly-awaited volume delves deeper into Mark Twain's life, uncovering the many roles he played in his private and public worlds. Filled with his characteristic blend of humor and ire, the narrative ranges effortlessly across the contemporary scene. He shares his views on writing and speaking, his preoccupation with money, and his contempt for the politics and politicians of his day. Affectionate and scathing by turns, his intractable curiosity and candor are everywhere on view. Volume 2 delivers: More insights into his family life as a devoted father, husband and brother; Vignettes from his 19th century man cave; His pointed, unvarnished views on contemporary politics and religion; Meditations and musings on the writing process, including his solution to writer's block. Praise for New York Times Bestseller Volume 1: 'It feels like a form of time travel. One moment you're on horseback in the Hawaiian islands - or recovering from saddle boils with a cigar in your mouth - and the next moment you're meeting the Viennese maid he called, in a private joke, 'Wuthering Heights.' We can hardly wait for Volume 2.' New York Times. 'This first installment of Twain's autobiography brings us closer to all of him than we have ever come before.' New York Review of Books. inventory #40541.

Hardcover. Condizione: Good. Ten volume set. Black half-leather, dark green buckram, and gilt spine titles with raised bands and ruling in blind. Rubbing, moderate edgewear including peeling to leather, occasional light staining. All volumes sturdy and strong. Spines square; bindings sound. Marbled page edges and marbled endsheets. Pages toned, with sparse foxing throughout volumes. Individual volumes also have the following additional condition issues. Volume one: pages 447-474 are scraped to top edge, with creasing and edgewear just at the top margin, not affecting text. Volume two: corner crease to bottom fore-edge corner from pages 1439-1546. Volume three: external edgewear is heavier at fore-edge than other volumes, and there are several small scrapes to the leather at spine. Volume five: a previous fold (and present-day crease) at fly leaf had resulted in the bottom margin of the page sitting below the textblock, with expected edgewear just at bottom edge of the page. Volume six: A previous owner pressed flowers at page 4790, with accompanying darker toning to the paper. Volume ten: the Mercator world map has a few plant remnants, as though also once used to press flowers. The interiors are otherwise clean. Sixteen color plates in volume one. This set is exceptionally large and heavy, and may require additional postage to ship.
